There were several Newcastle – Sunderland – Middlesbrough derby matches taking place on Sunday 12 September though in this instance it was not football. Teams from the 4 sports (Judo, Volley ball, Badminton, Table Tennis) participating in the Premier League 4 Sport programme met in an inter Club competition at the Eston Leisure Complex, Middlesbrough on Sunday 12 September. The participants were drawn from the various satellite clubs set up in schools selected to take part in the programme.
The Table Tennis section was contested between two team from the Newcastle , two from Sunderland and one from Middlesbrough . The two Newcastle teams were drawn from pupils from Gateshead , North Tyneside and Newcastle . Four players came from Whickham School and Sports College with the other two from Heaton Manor School ( Newcastle ) and St Thomas Moore School ( North Tyneside ). All had been attending Satellite clubs which were being trained by a coach from Cramlington Table Tennis Club.
The Newcastle teams were easily identifiable as they wore the well known black and white shirt of the Magpies.
Although none of the Newcastle players had competed in such a tournament before they soon found their way round the table.
With 5 teams competing against each other in a round robin competition it mean that each team completed 4 matches over the 5 rounds with one team standing out in each round.
After three rounds Newcastle A were in the lead with 12 points having played and won 2 matches. Middlesbrough were in second place with 10 points from their 2 matches and Newcastle B were third with 7 points from 3 games.
In round 4 Middlesbrough and Newcastle A played a 3-3 draw and retained their first and second places in the table.
All rested on the lat round (Round 5) where Newcastle A played Sunderland A and Middlesbrough played Newcastle B. The Newcastle B team equalled ther A team’s performance coming away with a 3-3 draw. Newcastle A beat Sunderland A 5-1 to ensure their place at the top of the table followed by Middlesbrough in second place.
Well done to all the participants in the competition and thank you to all who supported the competition in any way and especially the overall organiser, Alan Cawthorne the Premier League 4 Sport Co0ordinator for Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community.
