Whickam School and Sports College is a co-educational comprehensive secondary school covering the age range of 11 to 18+. It is located in Burnhouse Lane , Whickham, Newcastle upon Tyne , NE16 5AR. The School educates over 1600 students and has the largest sixth form in Gateshead .
The College has 10 table tennis tables along with the required nets, bats and balls to make it an ideal site for inclusion in the Premier League 4 Sport scheme. Newcastle United Football Club through their charitable arm Newcastle United Foundation and in partnership with the English Table Tennis Association and Cramlington Table Tennis Club are managing the project.
The goverment has provide funding for a table tennis coach to provide coaching and support to pupils of Whickham School during out of scool hours.
With its Sports College status the School is keen to promote all sports and table tennis is no exception. It is hoped that as well as the after school club table tennis may be included in the highly popular Easter Sports Camp which will be run over the 2 Easter weeks (excluding Good Friday and Easter Monday) begining 6 April 2010.
Pupils are invited to participate in an after school club on Mondays immediately after school. The first session provided by the project will be on Monday 11 January 2010.

In year 2 the Club is aimed particularly at year 7 and 8 pupils.
The first session of the School year was held on Tuesday 14 September 2010 when 29 pupils attended. There were 3 familiar faces from last year but 26 new year 7 pupils.
Over the period 14 September 2010 to 23 November 2010 a total of 10 sessions took place. A total of 49 (44 boys, 5 girls) different pupils attended at various times with the total number of attendances being 214 (194 boys, 20 girls). 22 (19 boys, 3 girls) pupils had attended for 5 or more sessions.
There were 4 pupils from Whickham in a group of 6 who represented Newcastle on 12 September in an inter regional table tennis tournament between Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

Tthe Fred Perry Table Tennis Urban Cup, a nationwide Table Tennis team competition aimed at a grassroots level of participation within major towns and inner city areas. The competition is restricted to boys and girls between the ages of 11 to 15 and is open only to those participating in the Premier League 4 Sport table tennis Satellite clubs which are working in partnership with the Newcastle United Foundation and Cramlington Table Tennis Club, the Hub Club.
Level 1 of the competition involved the youngsters at each of the satellites to identify the top 2 players, boys and girls, at that site. These boys and girls then moved to Level 2 which is a further competition, held on a Round Robin basis, at Cramlington Table Tennis Club. The winners and runners up from the boys and girls will now go on to the National Finals, to be held in London in February 2011.
The Whickham Level 1 competition was played over several weeks at Tuesday sessions. Lewis Houston and Daniel Graham were the top 2 boys. Chloe Allen, Abbi Jones and Zarah Rodgers were the girls invited to compete in the Level 2 competition at Cramlington on Friday evening 12 November 2010.
Lewis Houston won the Level 2 Boys competition and Chloe Allen was runner up in the Girls Competition. Both will be representing Newcastle at a venue in London on Saturday 19 February 2011.

The first session was held on Monday 11 January when 11 pupils attended. Up to Monday 15 March 2010 a total of 34 different pupils took part with 124 attendances over 8 sessions. 10 pupils had attended for 5 or more sessions.
Over the period 11 January 2010 to 19 July 2010 a total of 23 sessions took place. A total of 48 different pupils attended at various times with the total number of attendances being 224. 19 pupils had attended for 5 or more sessions.
In addition 18 X 1 hour developmental / taster sessions were held over 9 days of the Easter Holidays 2010. These were aimed at Primary School children from the Whickham feeder schools. 132 participants (83 boys, 49 girls) attended with the total number of attendances being 273 (168 boys, 105 girls).
On 6 March 2010 14 pupils from Whickham School and Sports College together with junior members from Cramlington Table Tennis Club visited the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield to watch the English National Table Tennis Championships.
Most of the Whickham pupils have been regular attendees at the after school table tennis club which meets immediately after school every Monday during term time.
Watching sport on television is all very well but nothing beats watching it live at an event. For the Whickham pupils this was their first opportunity to see top class table tennis players close up in action.
An enjoyable and educational experience was had by all the pupils and who could be seen the following Monday working just that little bit harder on their technique.
Thanks to funding through the Pemier League 4 Sport programme the excursion was supplied free of charge the pupils.
