NORTHUMBERLAND CLOSED TOURNAMENT FRIDAY 9 MARCH (Juniors) & SUNDAY 18 MARCH 2007

 

Andrew Wilkinson retained the Northumberland County Championships title by beating Eddie Smith in the final of the Open Singles at Cramlington Sporting Club in one of the best finals in recent years.

The first two games of an exciting match were narrowly won by Smith 13-11, 13-11 and in the latter stages of the third game he had his nose in front and looked the likely winner, but Wilkinson came back strongly to edge Smith out at 14-12, and then took command of the final two games to take the title.

The two players had earlier combined to retain their doubles title by beating Dave Godbold and Geoff Salter in the final.

Smith, in his first season as a Veteran, also won the Veterans title with a victory over Dave Godbold. This was particularly satisfying for Smith as he had recently lost to Godbold in the semi-finals of the National Championships at Sheffield .

Pauline Long was victorious in the Womens Singles with Kaye Morse the runner-up.

Winners in the Graded Events were Jimmy Scope (Grade 1) Mick Bull (Grade 2) Steve Todd (Grade 3) and Brian Philip (Grade 4). The handicap singles final turned out to be an all German final with Nico Krause (8) triumphing over Ralf Bauer . Both players play for Cram ling ton TTC.

The Norman Moore Memorial Cup for Juniors was won by Calum Main from Dumfriesshire who plays for Cramlington with Cramlington also supplying the runner up in Kevin Watson.

The Cadets played for the Harry Dignan Cup and this was won by Anthony Walton of Sunderland who beat Jason Pu in the final.

Ryan Richardson won the under 13 singles and his brother Dean took the under 10 title.
