Northumberland Closed Table Tennis Tournament

Andrew Wilkinson won the Open Singles title at the Northumberland Closed Tournament to become the first holder of the Alan Morpeth Memorial Cup when he defeated Dave Godbold in the final. On his way to the final Wilkinson accounted for Jimmy Scope in the quarter finals and Steve Penman in the semis. Godbold beat Chris Thorpe in the quarters and then put out the number 2 seed, Eddie Smith in the semis.

The cup was being fought for for the first time and was in memory of Alan Morpeth who, for many years, was the mainstay of table tennis in Northumberland. His daughters, Sheila and Alison presented the cup to Wilkinson.

The Womens Singles was won by Lynne Herrington who had a comfortable victory over Linda Todd.

Godbold repeated his success against Smith when he beat him in the final of the Veterans Singles.

This year the doubles was played with every pair consisting of a highly ranked player partnering a lower ranked player. Barry Richardson and Ken Brown were the eventual winners, beating Andrew Dryden and Jamie Dent in the final.

There were four graded events and the winners were Steve Penman (Grade 1) Ralf Bauer (Grade 2) Ryan Richardson (Grade 3) and Ken Brown (Grade 4). The handicap singles was won by Dan Dodds who beat Ryan Richardson after giving him 5 points start in each game.
