Northumberland Closed Table Tennis Tournament 5 April 2009

Andrew Wilkinson retained his title of Northumberland Champion when he won the Alan Morpeth Memorial Cup for the second year running when the Northumberland Championships were held at Cramlington. After coming through his group in the open singles he then defeated Karen Henry and Dale Aitkenhead before overcoming David Graham in the semi finals to once again meet his main rival Eddie Smith in the final.

Smith got the better of Ryan Richardson and Neil McMaster and then Steve Penman in the semis.

Wilkinson won the first game of the final 11-9 but Smith took the second game 11-5. Wilkinson then took command to win the next two ends to lift the cup.

The Womens Singles was played on a round robin basis where Karen Henry remained unbeaten to lift the Womens title with Pauline Long finishing in second place.

As expected Smith claimed the Veterans title, beating McMaster in the quarters, Aitkenhead in the semis and defeating Richard Wilson in the final. Wilson put out Rod Roberts, Jim Stamas and Barry Richardson.

The doubles event was won by Jim Bradbury and Nico Krause who defeated Barry Richardson and Steve Ralph in the final.

Ryan Richardson was the outstanding player in the junior events winning both the Norman Moore Memorial Cup in the junior singles and retaining the Harry Dignan Cup in the Cadets. In the junior final he beat Alex Guttridge and in the cadet final triumphed over his younger brother Dean.

Ellis Cooper took the under 13 title with a resounding victory over Dean Richardson but lost to him in the semi finals of the Cadets.

The under 11 title was won by Jack Quinn with Adam Shafiq the runner up.

Graded events were also played with Steve Penman winning grade 1, Rod Roberts grade 2, Nico Krause grade 3 and Ellis Cooper grade 4.

Krause completed a very good day by beating Ryan Richardson in the final of the handicap singles.
