Following the final of the Team Handicap KO Competition held at Cramlington there will be a new name on the Cup. Newcastle Community A and Whitehouse Lane, two of the top teams from Division 2, played each other for the trophy and the Stowell Street based Club emerged victors winning 5 games against the Lane’s 3.
The competition is organised annually by the Northumbria Table Tennis League with 46 teams participating this year. Handicaps are based on the competitors record in the previous season. With both teams coming from the higher regions of Division 2 there was not a wide gulf between the individual handicaps with three of the games being played “off scratch”.
On their way to the final Whitehouse Lane scored wins over Cramlington Spartans, Blaydon, Mortimer and Cramlington Cobras.
Newcastle Community was drawn away for each round and defeated their hosts Byker ‘A’, Cramlington Corinthians, NESLC Codgers and Cramlington Magpies.
In the final Community’s team was Ben Yu, Yao Li and Philip Wong. Whitehouse’s team comprised of Mick Hope, Charlie Mouzon and Mohinder Rawat.
Man of the match was Ben Yu who won his 3 games. Rawat beat Wong in the first game of the match but Community stormed back to take the next 4 games before Mouzon stemmed the flow with a victory over Li. Mouzon scored gained a second win against Wong before the match ended in the 5-3 victory for Community.
Aubrey Drapkin, Chairman of Northumberland Table Tennis presented trophies to winners and runner up.
Thanks go to Cramlington Table Tennis Club for hosting the final.
