20 local league players participated in a training course with the aim of attaining qualification as an ETTA Level 2 coach. The course was organised by Cramlington Table Tennis Club and was held over 2 consecutive Sunday afternoons (15 and 22 January 2006) from noon until 6.00pm, at the Sporting Club Cramlington, Cramlington Community High School.
The course consisted of a twelve-hour part theory, part practical session plus twelve hours of practical coaching under the guidance of a qualified Table Tennis coach tutor. Bernie Morris, an experienced coach and tutor from Sunderland led the course with some assistance from Newcastle based Peter Yeung.
Each member completing the 12 hours training will now have to complete a minimum of 12 hours coaching other players, under the supervision of a qualified coach. They will then be offered an opportunity to take part in the final stage of the course - the assessment. This separate assessment session will take place at Cramlington within the next 2 months giving each participant an opportunity to get the necessary coaching hours completed. The assessment will be taken by an ETTA qualified coach independent of the coach who took the did the initial training. Players who successfully complete the assessment are then able to apply for the Level 2 award.
Thanks to a grant from the National Lottery funded Awards for All scheme and some assistance from Blyth Valley District Council and Northumberland Table Tennis, CTTC was able to heavily subsidise the course.
CTTC invites any young people wishing to learn how to play table tennis to attend their Club night on any Friday evening starting at 7.00pm at the Sporting Club Cramlington; there will be an abundance of coaches.
Interested participants can email Alan Hedley, Club Chairman, with any queries they may have.
